Bucking the odds and loving it.

“Never let the odds keep you from pursuing what you know in your heart you were meant to do.”   …    Satchel Paige

Statistics state that 8 out of 10 new businesses fail within the first 3 years.  They claim that 50% of marriages where the woman is over 25 end in divorce.  And did you know that 60% of marriages don’t survive the death of a child?  Well … that’s what the “official odds” have to say anyway.

I think that Satchel Paige has the right of it.  I don’t think that success … in any venture … has a huge amount to do with what the so-called experts advise, claim or pontificate about.  It’s been my observation … both from a close scrutiny of my own life and from a people-watcher point of view … that it’s what’s in one’s Heart and Spirit that determines how far we go, what we’re willing and able to endure and exactly how we will make the trip from here to there.

During times when pain or frustration were my drivers I still accomplished things … but they never seemed to last.  It was as if I had built my forward motion on ground that was underlaid with shifting and/or quicksand … and no matter how fast I ran my wounded chauffeurs kept careening us down life’s highway … using causing really messy crashes in the process.  The good news is that as I learned to clean up my internal landscape; began peace talks to calm the warring factions, learned how to dodge and then diffuse toxic situations before they could explode in my face and finally: fired the old chauffeurs the voice of my Heart became easier to hear.

Over the last few years I have come to really trust and love the input of my Heart.  It always seems to have my best interest … well … at heart.  Between its voice and the Voice of Life I find that the arrival of happier times is pretty much guaranteed … as long as I listen.  These days I do my best to be really clear about what it is I’d like to see delivered to my doorstep, to ignore all of the nay-sayers and harbingers of doom and then to just park my little butt down in a comfy chair and listen.  I know that my Heart will whisper in my ear and that Life will plunk wonderful synchronicities onto my path to point the way forward.  With help like that … who needs external, self-proclaimed experts?  I think that I’ll place my money on the ones who really know what’s going on … and in my world that would be my best friends … Life and Heart.
