“We may have all come on different ships, but we’re in the same boat now.” … Martin Luther King, Jr.
So here we all are … together… on one little planet … in the corner of one mid-sized galaxy on the outer edges of one gigantic and multi-levelled Universe. It would seem that we are indeed “in the same boat now” … and what a boat it is … filled with the diversity and beauty of life and simultaneously filled to the brim with contrasting discord and uneasiness.
Martin Luther King is right … we may have come to our current situations … whatever they may be … from a multitude of different beginnings … many beliefs and divergent thoughts may have contributed to the circumstances in which we find ourselves … but when all is said and done … here we all are … looking and longing for some kind of peaceful resolution to the woes of the world.
I like his ship analogy. It reminds me that each of us is an individual … responsible for charting our own course through both life’s storms and its brilliantly sunny moments. It reminds me that sailing alone on a large body of water can be perilous if I’m unclear about where I’m going, don’t co-plan my trip with the Master Navigator and/or choose to ignore the weather reports and storm warnings that Life generates for me on a regular basis.
The good news is that I’ve found that travel advice is available pretty much non-stop in the way of helpful strangers, synchronistic events that cause me to correct my course and a re-tooled inner gyroscope … I just have to remember to pay attention and then “go-with-the-flow” instead of battling the currents as I used to be so fond of doing. In this trip through life … on this one little planet … we are all sailing our individual boats as best we can … and whilst the ways and means of our finding calmer waters and more peaceful shores may vary greatly … I believe … that sooner or later … the majority of us will indeed find said shores… whereupon we will discover … much to our surprise and delight … that whilst we all arrived there in different ships … we have all ended up exactly where we were meant to be … and longed to be … all along.
