Allowing Gratitude to be my way of life

“As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them.” …John F. Kennedy

My mom drilled into me … as I did with my children … that whenever someone gave me something I should respond with a “Thank You”.  I remember having a tug-of-war one day … one that involved a cookie … and a neighbour’s child whose parents had obviously NOT taught him the aforementioned lesson. You could see the question in his eyes: “Why isn’t she letting go of the cookie?”  The answer was supplied by my then 3-year-old who looked at him and said: “You have to say “Thank you” first before she’ll give it to you.”  Thank you wise one!

As I got older I realized that simply saying the words was not enough … next lesson to teach the kids … “mean-it-when-you-say-it”.  “But what if I don’t really like the advice … or food … or attention that I’m getting?”  The answer; I found, was really quite simple: “In every gift … food … advice … or attention there is always some nugget for which I can be grateful.” … and so … it is for that, that I express my genuine gratitude.  Sometimes those nuggets are buried pretty deep and I have to really search to find them.  That’s O.K. because I have learned that if the actual gift doesn’t seem to contain anything about which I can get excited then I can always find some happiness and gratitude in the heartfelt effort of the giver.

As an ardent watcher-of-people I can’t help but notice that there are not a lot of them out there who are “living their gratitude”.  I’m not talking about saying “Thanks for the doughnuts.” to the guy at the water cooler … I’m talking about showing a little gratitude to Capital “L” Life.  Whilst a little rain does tend to fall into everyone’s life … believe me I know! … I think that we all need to be taking a look around and really appreciating … not only this truly awesome planet upon which we wander … but also our friends … our health … and the amazing bounty which is both our birthright and Life’s gift to us.  So … right here and now … I’d like to express a little appreciation!  “Thank you Life for the fabulous support … the wonderful friends … and the many opportunities to be Me.  Ms. Sunshine wants me to thank you for the bright, shiny and warm days and little Miss Perky said thanks for “everything” as she ran out the door to play.  You’re the best Life … thanks for continuing to co-create such an awesome life with me!”

Godspeed and Joyful Journeying Everyone.

Yes … I agree … Life is indeed good … sometimes we may have to look a little harder to see past the storms that are blowing through … but I believe that even inside of said storms there is beauty to behold. Let’s give a BIG cheer for our Attitude of Gratitude! 🙂 Have a great day Sue!
