“I will burn candles of smiles in the bosoms of the joyless. Before the unfading light of my cheer, darkness will take flight.” … Yogananda
There are two ways to look at pretty much everything in the world … from the positive, upbeat, optimistic, hopeful side … or from the negative, discouraged, pessimistic, hopeless side of things. If you are an ardent news watcher it’s not easy maintaining Category #1. If you’re one of the millions of people worldwide who are affected by depression then Category #1 becomes a huge challenge and Category #2 is where your chemical imbalances encourage you to live.
After years of sharing my chipper personality with people I understand that not everyone enjoys Miss Perky’s company quite as much as I do. Many people have made the mistake of thinking that just because I am cheerful that it means that I am unaware of reality and other people’s circumstances. I assure you that such is not the case. I was simply gifted with a disposition that naturally sees every glass as not only ½ full but as dashing back to its completely-full state once again.
Upon discussing this very topic one night a very dear, late friend made what I thought was a really insightful remark. She said: “If someone is depressed and I jump down into the pit with them then there will be no-one left up top to encourage and lift either one of us out … so what good would that be?” A-h-h-h Wendy … I always did love your beautiful, warm, insightful and cheery nature.
So … whilst Miss Perky, Ms Sunshine and I may not be “burning candles in the bosoms of the joyless” … nor setting the world on fire with our enthusiastic approach to life … we definitely seem to cause many a depressed thought to flee the scene. Realistically I can’t be any different than I am … nor would I wish to be. I’ve experienced the darkness. I’ve clawed my way out: and I much prefer sunbathing in my bright, sunny, interior landscape to languishing in the aforementioned dark and dreary land. Well … I have to run … Miss Perky just arrived back from the Dollar store with a big bunch of pretty candles … and you know what that means don’t you!??! Yep, time to go shine some light in lightless corners and smile at all and sundry.
Godspeed and Joyful Journeying Everyone
