“In order to become who you came here to be you have to be willing to give up who other people talked you into being.”… Susanne
One of the up sides about tradition is that it provides a basic, solid foundation from which everyone can operate. One of the down sides of tradition is that it all-too-often becomes the way that insecure people use as a means of control. For them … instead of being a pleasant, smooth highway from which many interesting paths and ways exit … tradition becomes the rut down which they choose to direct … not only their own path … but everyone else’s as well.
When we were brand new in this world we were full of optimism and brilliant ideas but somewhere between there and here those diggers of ruts used their awesome steamroller talents to flatten all of us bright sparks. The end result of said input being that we forgot who we really are and came to believe that we are only what others perceive us to be. We became shadows of our former selves and lost in other people’s dream worlds.
It’s been my experience that we can’t recover our true Selves or the path down which we came here to walk as long as we are replaying someone else’s script in our heads or running down someone else’s ruts. So what are we to do? I know a lot of people who spend their time pointing their fingers at the past … but that doesn’t really change anything. Other people become controllers themselves … but making someone else feel small so that you can feel bigger really isn’t the answer either. So, what is?
It seems to me that … as with all things … the answer lies within us. We can’t go back and make our lives a do-over. We also can’t change any of the people who are around us now. However, what we can do is make different choices in each and every Now. We can build internal ladders and do our best to climb out of aforementioned ruts and … knowing that we have the innate ability to do not only this but also to create new roads for ourselves once out of said hole … we can relearn to become the creators of our own worlds. In order to become someone different … in order to walk a different path … in order to become who we came here to be … we must be willing to give up the old and forge a new path into the unknown future.
