“Sometimes good things fall apart, so better things can fall together.” Jessica Howell
Life always has the long view covered. It makes the most awesome plans … dreams the most amazing dreams … and throws the greatest dreams-come-true parties that Miss Perky has ever seen. For me … the challenging part of Capital “L” Life’s awesome plans is that they very seldom come to fruition within the timeline … or in the way … that I had planned.
I imagine that there are a lot of people who feel the same way about Life’s sense of timing and delivery. One thing that I have noticed; however, is how some of the biggest challenges and seeming setbacks in our lives are actually the TNT that blows up our old road … and leapfrogs us onto a new, previously unimagined path. Take Malala Yousafzai … one day she was a 14 year old school girl in Pakistan … the next she was shot in the head by the Taliban for having the nerve to desire an education. Wow … that seems pretty horrible! I guess Life had plans for her though because one year later she spoke at the United Nations to advocate for the education of girls and received the 2013 Sakharov prize.
And then there’s Terry Fox. One day he was an ordinary 18 year old … the next he lost a leg to bone cancer. Again … that seems pretty horrible. But did he let that stop him? You know that he didn’t. Even knowing that he had a terminal illness he ran across Canada … raising awareness of cancer and to this day … every year millions of people jog to raise money for cancer research in remembrance of him.
Now I’m no Malala … nor am I Terry … but I do have my own road-altering story. One day I was a busy, compassionate woman building a business that helped seniors … the next I was diagnosed with a rare form of bone marrow cancer. Did that keep me down? No it did not … but apparently I was not paying attention to “the signs” and missed the off-ramp that Life had in mind … because a year later the hospital shared a super bug with me and I lost my left femur, hip and tons-o-muscle. Ouch!! These days I write, I blog, I share my upbeat nature with all and sundry and … I’m still building that company that helps seniors … just in a completely different way. It’s true what Jessica says … “Sometimes good things fall apart, so better things can fall together!”
