“Life always answers our questions. We just don’t always like the answers.”… Susanne
In the 90’s I read a series of books by Shakti Gawain. She introduced me to the concept of mirrors. Now I’m not talking about the ones that hang over the bathroom sink …or the tall ones that reflect how we look for the day … or even the floor-to-ceiling variety that grace the foyers of large office buildings. Ms. Gawain introduced me to what I lovingly refer to as “People-Mirrors”. It was an interesting concept … and one that I have since adopted.
Over the years I learned to watch the people around me with an eagle eye peeled for the things about myself that they would reflect back to me. I didn’t always like what I saw. Often I wished that I could deny that I ever behaved the way that they were … but when I stripped away their personality … and all I was left with was their behavior, attitude or actions … and further … when I turned around and looked inside of myself … more often than not a resounding: “Damn I do, feel that way” would spring out of my lips. Life certainly had an interesting way of answering my question: “Why are they behaving that way??”
Capital “L” Life has been very patient with me. It has sent an endless variety of People-Mirrors to help me to see … not only the less than desirable qualities that I wanted to change … but also the positive actions and attitudes that I adopted in their stead. So … all-in-all I’d have to say that this People-Mirror thing is a really effective tool for learning … changing … and growing. These days I see Miss Perky reflected in so many of the faces around me … and that makes all of us smile. And of course … as with any mirror … the more Miss Perk and I smile … the more smiles we get back in return.
