“If you don’t like the way things are in the world around you Now is perfect time to begin making different choices and preparing for a better tomorrow.” … Susanne
It may sound really glib to say that if we don’t like the way that things are that simply making different inside choices will change our outside world. To the people who are being bombed on the Gaza strip their choices must seem pretty limited. For the women of India who can’t even walk down a street or send their female children to school without fear of rape … the choices must seem particularly small. And for the minimum wage … or lower … worker in any country who struggles … often in unsafe and/or downright dangerous conditions … just to feed their families … choices must seem like something that only rich people have. So how can we give change one more chance?
As the girls, Capital “L” Life and I trekked across Medical Crisis land the outside world looked pretty bleak. The vistas sucked. The company … apart from a few truly awesome friends and family … generally ranged from discouraging at best to downright insensitive … and I don’t think that there was a single medical professional who thought that anything good was going to come out of our long trip. The up side to all of that is that I discovered something wonderful. “What the heck was that?” you ask. I discovered that when all of the outside stuff was really horrible … the most effective way to change it was to be different on the inside. Sometimes it took a wee while for the world to catch up … but eventually it always did.
As we all know we can’t do anything about the past. It’s not always possible to change the part of today that swirls around us either. But we always have control over what we think … how we feel … and how we respond. No-one else is living in our minds and our hearts but us and in there we are the ultimate authority. Others may try to stop us … they may try to change us … and their fears and judgements may try to overcome us … but ultimately it is our own Mister or Miss Perky whose voice we must find ways to hear for they are the ones who will buoy us up in the harsh times and carry us past all of the naysayers. If you don’t like the way things are in the world around you … that’s O.K. … because Now is always the perfect time to make different choices and prepare to welcome in one heck-of-a-better tomorrow.
