“No-one can tell you who you are … only your Heart knows that. Crank up the volume and listen to its gentle voice.” ... Susanne
There are lots of people in the world who would love to dictate how and what you think … how you behave … and what you feel. We have only to look at the latest news from the war-torn zones of the world to see how determined some of them are to force their viewpoints on everyone else around them. Many of these people are even willing to kill in order to be the ultimate voice of authority. It doesn’t seem to have occurred to them that a) death is the ultimate freedom from their tyranny and b) fear may get people to say the “right” things … but it will never convince a gentle heart to believe those things.
I think that … like a lot of us … I made the mistake of always trying to live up to someone else’s standards of “good enough”. When Dr. Phil asked his famous question: “So how’s that working for you?” I had to answer: “Not so great.” The ex was a perfectionist, my dad was distant and my mom got the stuffing kicked out of her at an early age so learned The Way of the Controller. Fortunately my sons … both gifted … both brilliant … and both totally on-board with me and my Heart … were always willing and eager to crank up the volume of their Heart-Songs and then play them in harmony with mine. They understood from an early age that the ones who knew what was best for them was ...them … and apart from teaching them manners and How-to-play-nice-with-other-people …. I pretty much encouraged their forays into individuality.
A lot of years have passed and gallons of water have passed under my bridge since those Pleaser-Days. With the help of Miss Perky’s cheer-leading, Ms. Sunshine’s Focus-on-the-Good-Stuff Eyewear and Life’s jumbo-sized hugs I think that I’m finally figuring out how to consistently tune out the noise of the world and tune into the sweet music of my Heart-Song. My inner music is leading me onto new paths and reminding me of the steps for Life’s Dance-of-Joy. The messages of my Heart lift me up when I’m down and mirror Polly’s cheers. And apparently my Heart & Life are perfectly in sync when it comes to sharing their version/vision of an awesome Me … which of course encourages me to venture out and try more and more. You know what? I like this Heart that I’ve found and so far it hasn’t steered me wrong. I think I’m going to keep it!
