“It’s the Being not the doing that causes the biggest changes.” … Susanne
I think that everyone has things in their lives that they’d like to change. Sometimes it’s just the simple, day-to-day annoyances and sometimes it’s the relationship-shaking, faith-testing kinds of things. But no matter which end of the spectrum we fall on it seems to me that pretty much all of us are looking to figure out how to get the most bang for our buck with the least amount of discomfort.
It’s been my experience that trying to push the river upstream isn’t a hugely productive strategy. After years of unsuccessful attempts to divert the aforementioned river I’ve finally come to understand that if all I required to change to the world was sheer stubbornness … it would already be different. As it’s not … and as all the wasted effort was annoying the heck out of The Girls … they finally dragged me off for a sit-down chat with Life.
Being that It’s omniscient and all, It had a short list of suggestions to help me stop banging my head against the proverbial wall already prepared. (took the wind right out of Polly’s sails!) It politely suggested that perhaps I could share a copy with my friends so here it is:
1) Lasting outside change begins with inner change.
2) Easy, joyful outside change begins with inner change.
3) As the outside world always reflects back your inner landscape (… yup, you guessed it …) outside change begins with inner change.
You know if that list came from anyone other than Capital “L” Life I’d accuse them of being sarcastic. As it is I guess I’ll be hiring The Celestial Cleanup and Inner Landscaping crews for another marathon session of clearing-out-the-old-and-no-longer-relevant stuff followed by a re-beautifying of my inner world. I see Miss Perky drawing up plans with her crayons already!
Godspeed and Joyful Journeying Everyone
